Honeycomb is a delicious wonder of nature produced by honeybees. It's a hexagonal form comprised of beeswax, which is perfectly arranged. It's also one of the most useful components of the beehive. Honeycomb structures are employed in a myriad of scientific and engineering fields.
The honeycomb hive serves three purposes: a nursery for new bees and a storage area for pollen until it transforms into "bee bread," and a long-term place for the hive's reserve of nectar. When a beehive is swarming, the bees startup a new hive with a new honeycomb base.
Bees build honeycomb by moving their flight muscles to produce heat which softens the beeswax-based plates they release from their abdomens. The bees shape the wax into cylinders, and connect adjacent cells on both sides. This arrangement is extremely constant, which indicates that it's not the result of a blind physical force, but rather a highly-organized construction behavior pattern. It's also an exceptional example of convergent evolutionary - an example of convergent evolution where a similar feature emerges independently in closely related species.
